Hello, Blogville. This is Sarge's Mom today. I took over his bloggie because today is the dreaded annual vet-trip-from-hell day. LOL Oh, how we hate this. Sorry for such a wordy and long post today.
NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
For those who weren't around, or don't remember what this can be like, Sarge is actually very anti-social. He's ultra protective of his own body and he tries to kill everyone at the vet's office. He goes totally, off-the-charts crazy and gets very vicious. So, over the years we've tried various ways to deal with this and make it safer for everyone. Oh, boy. Here is a copy/paste from the disaster two years ago::::

All the LUCK in the world...
...couldn't help this mess!
Hello again Blogville, Sarge's Mom here. Thanks so much for the well wishes, luck and support to Sarge's dogtor post yesterday. Well, it was so very, very bad! OMD it was very bad!
When Stan got to the vet at 9am, the happy pills had not had any effect at all, so they wrestled Sarge down in a huge ordeal and the vet gave him a happy shot. Stan took him outside to walk around until it started to work.
Thirty minutes later and the happy shot had not had any effect at all, so they wrestled Sarge down again in a huge ordeal and the vet gave him a stronger happy shot. This one was some version of heroin and the vet said it would make him totally loopy in about 15 minutes tops. Thirty minutes later and the second happy shot had not had any effect at all.
The vet said he's never treated a dog that didn't respond to at least one of these three drugs and Sarge didn't respond at all. The vet said the only choice was to wrestle him down again in a third huge ordeal and just gave him the full anesthesia. This finally knocked him clear out, totally unconscious in about 10 minutes. Unbelievable! He scratched, clawed, bit, spit, foamed at the mouth, pooped, peed, everything. The vet couldn't believe it. He said from now on we'll skip all of the happy meds and we'll just take him right to the exam room, one wrestling match for the full anesthesia. Done. OUT COLD. OMD Well, Stan has a sense of humor about it and he said the vet was wonderful about it. How embarrassing. The vet said this is all in Sarge's head and he is so strong. He is also abnormally resistant to any kind of happy drugs. WOW, aren't we lucky?!? BOL Long story short, they were back home at 3pm and Sarge zonked out on his cot. He will probably be totally useless until about mid-day today. BOL The vet said he is perfectly healthy. Blood work is right-down-the-middle normal. Got his teeth done, nails done, blood work, heartworm test and pills, eye ointment for his pannus, lepto and bordatella. He's good for another 100,000 miles. BOL Thank dawg we all have a sense of humor. The vet, my hubby and an experienced vet tech- and the three of them could not control our 44 pound holy terror wild man insane nut job Sarge.
So, Blogville, are you impressed with your Police Commissioner?!? He wasn't going down without a fight. No Sir-E. I think inside his crazy canine head he was thinking "THEY'LL NEVER TAKE ME ALIVE!!! NOOOOOOO HELL NO, I WON'T GO!!!!" What a nut.
Hugs,
Lori
SO: Last year, we went back for his annual torture with a new game plan. Forget the happy meds that don't work...go straight for the full sedation and that's that. We thought this would be easy-breezy and no sweat. ahem. As instructed, we had him fast so they could knock him out. We took away all food and water at 4pm the afternoon before. Got him to the vet, wrestled him down once, a quick shot, and he was totally zonked out cold. PERFECT!! YIPEEEE!!
Then, the call came. Our vet called a few hours later and quizzed me on when we fed him last. I explained it was around 4pm the afternoon before. Well, Sarge had another surprise for us. When he started to come out of the anesthesia, he began to throw up and choke. The vet had to give him adrenaline and a tummy thrust and a scoop down this throat and apparently he nearly died. Literally, he almost choked to death. We were stunned and upset and embarrassed. The vet was a little shaken up too. The vet didn't necessarily seem to believe us....I think he figured we fed him late or didn't bother to pick up the food, but I swear we did. Sarge just didn't digest his food properly. Now, that actually explains a lot for us. Sometimes he just goes a day or two where he refuses to eat anything. He's always done this from time to time. That always baffled us, but now it makes sense. He has a weird stomach and I guess he doesn't always digest at a normal rate. Go figure. We were so embarrassed and upset that I didn't even post about it last May when it happened.
So, we fed him yesterday morning around 9am and he has had no food since. I know that's a long time, but we can't risk him choking again! So, he's famished, I'm sure, and very unhappy because it's 8am as I type and he knows that something is up. LOL
PLEASE WISH US BETTER LUCK TODAY THAN WE'VE HAD FOR THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS!! His appointment is at 9am and the torture begins...for all of us. We will be nervous wrecks until this ordeal is over and we get him back home. Holy Cow!! Please cross paws for us today, Blogville furiends.
Hugs,
Lori

ReplyDeleteCrikey...heaps of POTP wishes for this one... has the vet thought to ID the genetics for Sarge? The eating pattern is reminiscent of true wild-dog behaviour - never mind the physical responses you describe - and he does look like part dingo (or ought that to be coyote for your part of the world?) My friend 'Emm' dog before Remus (also a mini-foxie) was extremely anti-social due to poor early life and always had to be tied up when anyone other than family visited. It is such a shame, because when we love them, we want everyone to enjoy them too.... Blessings again for good outcomes this year. YAM xx
I am having a nervous breakdown reading it. our vet is half hour drive from here and we pass over a dozen vets that are within 5 to 10 minutes of our home. the reason is Max the one that looked so much like Sarge. the vet far away had a back door for dogs like this, no walking through people and other dogs. Max was not quite this bad, but bad enough. we would drag him down the hall, and it took 4 people to hold him, he was like a bull at 50 pounds... my question is, does Sarge let other people in your house? Max only let our kids and their kids in the house. all strangers we had to lock him in the bathroom...
ReplyDeleteI pray now tht Sarge will be ok today and that the knock out works for you. I can tell you that every time we took that annual visit my stomach started hurting the day before and I thought I would throw up on the way there.
I still remember this day and we always have it in our mind when we are on the way to the vet... Imagine we had the same vet... I bet he would throw the towel in after having two of that guys the same day :o) I cross my paws that this trip will be without special adventures...

ReplyDeleteMom told me none of the pets in our family have been afraid of or anxious at the vet. My human sissy used to get all kinds of mad when they took Toto
the Mighty Mini Dachshund to the vet. Toto did fine but the VET kept call him a she. My sis once asked mom where she thought he went to Vet School.

I'm not even sure I can handle reading another vet disaster episode.
ReplyDeletePaws crossed all went well today.
We have our paws crossed that all went well today and you are safely home and napping your drugs off now.
ReplyDeletePoor Sarge and poor YOU. That has to be so very stressful for everyone. Both Barkley and Abby LIKE the vet and practically pull me off my feet getting in the door. Keeping fingers and paws crossed.
ReplyDeleteOnce upon a time I had a fox terrier who was very much like Sarge in this regard. She could be absolutely vicious if someone she wasn't familiar with tried to pet her. She was always sweet as could be with me from day one, so I was surprised to discover this about her. She was a shelter dog and I always wondered if this behavior is what made someone else give her up or if the shelter made her this way. She was also a complete nightmare at the vet's office. Anyway, I feel your pain.
ReplyDeleteI hope the vet visit went well and all is back to normal again.
Oh my word! That is horrible for everyone involved!
ReplyDeleteWe used to have a cat that would go "feral" at the vet---he was like a balloon let loose as the air escaped....he was zooming all over the room. He was scared, the vet was scared, I was scared....
We had to have a plan after that. He had to be muzzled and wrangled into a kitty bag where only his head was out...and they would unzip a little zipper here and there to access what they needed.
Like Sarge, sedatives did not have an effect on him. He suffered a cardiomyopathy and we had to put him down when he was 3. It took THREE shots to put him down--he fought until the very end. Ugh.
I hope Sarge doesn't have to go to the vet very often!
